The siege and capture of Malacca from the Portuguese in 1640–1641: extracts from the archives of the Dutch East India Company; . 128–429
This document records the proceedings of the Annual General Meeting of the Straits Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, held at the Exchange Rooms on 27 March 1885, with the Hon’ble A. M. Skinner presiding as Vice-President.
Summary
The meeting confirmed the minutes of the previous general meeting, adopted the Annual Report and Treasurer’s Accounts for 1884 without discussion, and elected officers for 1885: Skinner as President, W. A. Pickering (c.m.g.) as Vice-President for Singapore, D. Logan as Vice-President for Penang, W. E. Maxwell (c.m.g.) as Honorary Secretary, and E. Koek as Honorary Treasurer, with five Councillors (pp. xi–xii).
Three new members — C. B. Cerruti, F. H. Gottlieb, and G. S. H. Gottlieb — were formally elected. A proposal by Mr. Knight to create a Vice-President for Malacca, with the Hon’ble D. F. A. Hervey as the first holder, was raised but deferred, the Honorary Secretary noting that a constitutional amendment would require prior notice to members. The Secretary also remarked on Malacca’s historical claim to the Society, citing the 1811 meeting of the Asiatic Society of Bengal there, when Raffles and Leyden were passing through on their way to Java (p. xii).
