Survey reports on Ulu Perak

This is a survey report by H. S. Deane documenting his journeys through the upper reaches of Perak State in 1879, published in the Journal of the Straits Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society.

Summary

Deane records his third journey to the Plus Valley, describing the ascent of Gunong Asal (4,150 feet) from Kampong Langkor on the Sungei Kerbau, a tributary of the Plus. From this summit he obtained trigonometrical bearings on the Titi Bangsa range and the eastern boundary mountains of Perak, and assessed the Plus Valley as rich in tin deposits with soil well suited to coffee cultivation (p. 136). He also reports on the navigability of the Plus, noting that approximately 50 miles upriver the river remained broad and deep (p. 137).

The report continues with Deane’s ascent of Gunong Inas (over 5,000 feet), one of the southernmost points of the Titi Bangsa range forming Perak’s northern limit, where he secured a complete circle of horizontal and vertical angles after several days of cloudy weather (p. 138). He then proceeded via the Krian river to Parit Buntar and Penang, where reciprocal observations were made on the Inas station from the Penang hill signal station at a distance of some 45 miles. The report concludes with a survey of the Bernam river, the southern limit of the State, which Deane steamed up to Kampong Chan-kat Berhitam, a distance of not less than 76 miles, before continuing by boat a further 7 to 9 miles (p. 139).
