Spirits
Research and Documentation
The Society’s literature on spirits spans the transition from the Straits Branch to the Malayan Branch, reflecting a shift from broad ethnographic surveys to more focused textual and ritual documentation. Zainal Abidin bin Ahmad’s 1922 article on akuan represents the most substantial treatment in the corpus, combining multi-village fieldwork with systematic categorisation and explicit engagement with prior scholarship, notably Skeat’s Malay Magic (1900) [1]. His cross-references to his own earlier paper on “Tiger-Breed Families” (JSBRAS 85, pp. 36–39) indicate a sustained comparative programme of study into Malay spirit-categories [1]. The 1924 “Malayan spiritual sidelights” by Hashim N.M. and G.T. MacBryan, though preserved only as a single-page notice in the available record, suggests continued interest in the subject during the early years of the Malayan Branch [2]. Winstedt’s 1925 note on the Kelantan Earth Spirit invocation, while brief, introduces a distinct methodological approach—textual transcription and linguistic analysis—complementing Ahmad’s ethnographic narrative [3]. Together, these contributions illustrate a community of scholars working to document Malay spirit-belief before its anticipated disappearance, with Ahmad himself cautioning that the belief was already in decline among younger generations by 1922 and urging investigators to allow for the Malay “habit of exaggeration and fondness for the marvellous” [1, p. 384].
