Rules in Malay chess

This short note by R. O. Winstedt, published in the Journal of the Straits Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society (Vol. 77, 1917), presents a set of rules for Malay chess as played at Sri Menanti in Negri Sembilan.

Summary

Winstedt notes that the game has previously been discussed by Mr. Elcum (Journal XLIX) and by R. J. Wilkinson in Life and Customs, Part III (1910). He explains that he obtained a manuscript copy of the rules some years earlier and has kept them in reserve until he could learn the game himself. Anticipating that he may never acquire the skill or that the manuscript may be lost to white ants, he publishes the rules as they stand, offering them to chess players who may find them of interest (p. 261).
