On a new and interesting dragonfly (Odonata) from Gunong Tahan
This short note by F. F. Laidlaw describes a new species of dragonfly, Macromidia genialis, from Gunong Tahan in Pahang, and provides brief remarks on the genus Macromidia (Corduliinae, Macromiina) (p. 230).
Summary
Laidlaw situates Macromidia within the Corduliinae, noting its loop-like anal area, purely Oriental distribution (three species total), and key diagnostic differences from the similar genus Macromia, including more rounded wings, cross-veins beyond the nodus, a relatively long pterostigma, and a tibial keel on all three leg pairs in the male (p. 230). The new species is distinguished from its congeners M. rapida and M. fulva by its smaller size and by a single row of cells (about seven) following the forewing triangle to near the nodus, where the other two species have two rows (p. 231).
The type specimen (a single male, collected by F. N. Chasen on 3 December 1921 at 1000 ft elevation) is fully described with measurements: hind-wing 27.5 mm, pterostigma 2.5 mm, abdomen 28.5 mm plus 1.5 mm for anal appendages. The species is named in association with the mountain’s presiding Jin, in the hope that the deity may guard its forest treasures (p. 230). A plate (V) illustrates the wings, anal appendages, and genitalia (p. 231).
