On a large specimen of the beaked ray Rhinobatis thouini (Lacep.). Records of the Raffles Museum, No. 24
This short note by N. Smedley describes a large specimen of the beaked ray Rhinobatis thouini (Lacep.) held in the Raffles Museum, Singapore.
Summary
Smedley reports that the specimen agrees closely with Cantor’s form except for the absence of a second constriction, a feature also lacking in a smaller cast specimen in the Raffles Museum. He provides measurements of the snout expansion: width at constriction 2½ in., nearer apex 4 in., and length of expanded portion 6 in. (p. 262).
Noting that both Bleeker and Day had treated Cantor’s species as a synonym of thouini, Smedley concludes that the peculiar expansion of the snout is characteristic of the female of that species (p. 262).
