Notes on a portion of the late Mr. Shelford’s list of Bornean butterflies, Part 1, published in the Society’s journal No. 41
This note by J. C. Moulton, Curator of the Sarawak Museum, provides taxonomic revisions to a portion of R. Shelford’s 1904–1905 list of Bornean butterflies, specifically addressing the subfamily Amathusiinae and a single Discophorinae entry (p. 13).
Summary
Moulton explains that subsequent works on Eastern butterflies, particularly Stichel’s Genera Insectorum (1905–6), have necessitated updating Shelford’s original list. The present paper revises the genus Amathusia (including the subspecies phidippus phidippus f. diluta and schonbergi borneensis), Amathuxidia amythaon ottomana, Thaumantis noureddin chatra, Zeuxidia amethystus wallacei, Zeuxidia doubledaii, Zeuxidia aurelia aureliana (noted as a great rarity from Lawas, Malinau and Paku), Thauria aliris, Faunis phaon, Faunis kirata, Taenaris horsfieldii occulta, and Enispe euthymius milvus (confined to Mt. Kina Balu) (pp. 13–18). For each entry, Moulton provides the original description, Shelford’s catalogue number, and distributional notes for Borneo relative to the wider range.
