Note on the wild goat of the Malay Peninsula

A brief note by Henry Norman recording the capture of a wild goat (Nemorrhoedus sumatrensis var. Swettenhami) on the flat coastal plain of Selangor, an unusual location for the species.

Summary

An adult male wild goat was taken alive in April 1905 on the sea coast at Batu, Kuala Langat district, Selangor. The surrounding terrain is entirely flat, with the nearest high hill (Jugra) some sixteen miles away, and wild goats had not previously been reported from that hill. Norman speculates the animal may have been driven from the interior by a rival and wandered down to the coast, where it was caught by the Penghulu’s dogs. The goat was kept in captivity and was becoming tame (p. 279).
