Flowering banana

This brief note by N. B. Dennys describes the flowering banana (Musa coccinea), known to Malays as “pisang sole,” as the most brilliantly flowering of the Musaceæ (p. 163).

Summary

Dennys notes that the plant bears a triangular rose-coloured fruit which is not eatable, and that fine examples may be seen in the public gardens at Singapore near the orchid house. He observes that the plant is easily grown yet has not found more favour among residents. The accompanying coloured plate was printed prior to the publication of Madame B. Hoola van Nooten’s Choice Flowers, Fruits, and Leaves of Java, and was at the time the only coloured illustration of the plant that had appeared (p. 163).
