Elaeocarpus barnardii, a new species described from Perak

I.H. Burkill’s brief taxonomic note describes Elaeocarpus barnardii, a new species of tree collected near Taiping, Perak, by H.B.F. Barnard.

Summary

The species is a lowland tree with reddish chestnut bark, small obovate glabrous leaves with slightly toothed margins, and deep blue olive-shaped fruits borne on earthward-facing racemes. Burkill notes its general conformity to the typical Elaeocarpus type of the Malay Peninsula and identifies its closest affinity as Elaeocarpus cuneatus Wight, a widely distributed Indian species reaching south to Tenasserim (p. 41).

The formal Latin diagnosis distinguishes the new species from E. cuneatus primarily by its pubescent three-locular ovary and smooth endocarp. The type specimens were collected by Barnard with flowers in February, immature fruit in March, and mature fruit in January (p. 41).
