Begonia haniffii, a small tuberous species of the islands of Lankawi

This short note by I.H. Burkill describes Begonia haniffii, a new tuberous species collected from the limestone islands of Lankawi, and positions it as the counterpart to B. curtisii from Kasoom in the Siamese Malay States (p. 103).

Burkill provides a detailed morphological account of the plant, noting its crimson translucent stems, dark green leaves densely covered with silvery spots of air-containing cells, and white flowers with crimson-veined petals. The species is distinguished from B. curtisii principally by its much more winged fruit and longer leaves (p. 104). A Latin diagnosis is appended, and the plant’s phenology is recorded: leaves appear in March and stems wither in October, with the species surviving the dry season as underground tubers (p. 104).
