A vocabulary of Pangan

A preface to a vocabulary of the Pangan language, compiled by T. S. Adams of the Malayan Civil Service and published in the Journal of the Straits Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, Vol. 85 (1922).

Summary

Adams explains that the vocabulary was collected from the Pangan of the Ulu Nenggiri below Kuala Betis in Kelantan, based on a brief visit in 1914 and three weeks of work in 1916 with a young Pangan man who had some knowledge of Malay (p. 97). He notes that the river Pangan trade with Malays in jungle produce and maintain clearings on the foothills, and that their speech inevitably includes some Malay borrowings; he was also informed that Pangan of the higher ranges used words not common among those on the river (p. 97).

Adams acknowledges that the vocabulary contains errors due to his inability to return to the Ulu for verification, and publishes it in the hope that it may serve as a foundation for a more thorough future study (p. 97). He thanks Dr. Winstedt for preparing the manuscripts and making references to the collected words (p. 97).
