A Malay lullaby

From Munshipedia, the MBRAS digital historical encyclopedia

A Malay lullaby

This is a brief occasional note by M. L. presenting a Malay lullaby (“Lagu Buai”) collected from Naning and the Negri Sembilan, published in JSBRAS Vol. 25 (1894).

Summary

The note reproduces a short lullaby sung to put children to sleep, comparing its structure to the English “Baby Baby Bunting” style of rhyme. The author observes that the tune is “pretty though monotonous” and notes that the words appear to have no actual meaning, functioning instead from an onomatopoeic perspective. No special origin for the text could be identified (p. 174).
