A large orang-utan
This short note by F. N. Chasen documents the measurements and physical description of an adult male orang-utan (Mias) taken alive at Katoengou in Dutch West Borneo in 1922 and which died in Singapore in January 1923 (p. 257).
Summary
Chasen provides a detailed table of body measurements for the specimen, comparing them with those of a Paris specimen recorded by Beccari and two of Hornaday’s largest Bornean specimens (p. 257). The animal’s height of 4 ft 7¼ in and arm span of 8 ft 0 in slightly exceed Hornaday’s records, though girth measurements are smaller, which Chasen attributes to the animal’s poor condition in captivity (p. 258). Skull measurements are also given, and Chasen notes that facial breadth is not correlated with overall size (p. 258).
The note concludes with a description of the skin and pelage, noting two distinct colour phases (dark sienna and light reddish-golden) and a notably luxuriant beard of 5½ to 6 inches, which Chasen contrasts with Hornaday’s description of a scanty beard never exceeding four inches (p. 259).
